SAFEGUARDING THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS
While much attention has been focused on how to combat the rise of nationalist politics that increasingly challenge the rule of law in Europe, little has been done to safeguard the democratic process in action.
Comprised of experts in data science, security, political strategy and communication we aim to empower citizens by giving them the tools and know-how to monitor their own elections and protect democratic institutions from state interference.
HUNGARY’S 2018 PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS
Testimonies from more than one hundred and sixty polling station officials have revealed the illegal bussing of voters from Ukraine, outright vote buying, voter intimidation, interference in the counting process, and post vote tampering.
Data analysis has raised questions about inconsistencies in the number of eligible voters, missing absentee ballots and suspicious ticket-splitting in swing constituencies.
Our research, which also pulls together local press reports from Hungary, Serbia and Romania for the first time, also raises concerns about the registering of phantom voters in border towns, election website malfunctions, and a network of companies responsible for building and running Hungary’s official election software and their links to Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party.
UNHACK DEMOCRACY EUROPE
We set up Unhack Democracy Europe to support the millions of Europeans, East and West, who know that real democracy needs checks and balances, the rule of law, human rights and a plural media.
